Chapter 11

“What are you watching, Nick?” Shawn asked as he plopped down on the couch next to his friend.

Nicholas grunted. “Don’t know. Don’t care.” Carefully he shifted so that they didn’t sit so close to each other.

Naturally Shawn could tell and know why Nick was acting like an insensitive jerk. A small sigh escaped Shawn’s lips, and he seemed to fold in on himself. His hands fidgeted in his lap as he whispered, “I’m sorry, Nick.”

Nick grimaced and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, pretending the TV had something worth watching so intently. “Forget it. I have.”

The small gasp Shawn made sounded suspiciously a lot like a sob. Nick refused to turn and see for himself if Shawn had tears in his eyes. One day soon Shawn would figure out this was for the best. For the sake of their friendship, they should not reminisce on what had transpired at the scene of the accident.

“I…I can’t, Nick. I’m so sorry.” This time the quiver in Shawn’s voice told Nick in no uncertain terms that Shawn was on the verge of an emotional breakdown.

Nick was well aware he was being cruel. He fisted his hands so tight his nails dug into his palms. Fuck, how long could he refute what they had?

“I think about it all the time,” Shawn whispered, his voice cracking. Another sob, and Nick could feel the couch shake as Shawn trembled. “You risked your life to save mine.”

“You’re my best friend, so…it was a given,” Nick grunted, unhappy with how things were hurtling into an infinity of chaos. They should not be doing this. It was too dangerous.

Shawn took Nick’s hand, with a tender touch opening Nick’s fist, and interlaced their fingers. Nick couldn’t look at Shawn. But he knew what would be there.

“You’re my best friend too, Nick.” Shawn spoke softly. Was he afraid? Nick hated the idea he might have put that nervousness into his best friend’s heart. “If…if you tell me to forget it ever happened…I will.”

The air suddenly seemed to compress in Nick’s chest. He couldn’t breathe. This was his one opening, his window of opportunity to bury the memory and the feeling so deep they would never resurface. What he did now would set the course of both their futures. There’d be no undoing the ramifications of his decision.

But in his heart, Nick had already come to one inevitable conclusion.

He couldn’t live without Shawn. In any sense of the word.

Finally Nick faced Shawn. Pale striations of tears covered Shawn’s cheeks. Tears still glistened in his green eyes, and his jaw quivered. But he lifted his chin in determination. Nick knew Shawn would do whatever he asked.

Shawn’s look pained Nick to the point of heartbreak. He couldn’t do this.

“I don’t wanna forget it either,” Nick confessed in a whisper. “I can’t let it go. You’re all I think about.”

Shawn’s gaze brightened, his lips broke into a smile, and he cupped Nick’s face gently. “Then let’s not pretend anymore.”

Last time they had kissed, smoke swirled around them, and the world was on fire.
